TORONTO, April 23, 2013 /CNW/ - The Globe & Mail is the fifth recipient of the John Syrnick Award for Journalism, sponsored by the Ukrainian-Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko. The Globe & Mail was chosen from a long list of Canadian print media who provide illuminating coverage of issues, significant to a readership of over one million Ukrainian Canadians.
According to the selection committee chair Dr. Christine Turkewych, "The committee selected The Globe & Mail for coverage of the 2012 elections in Ukraine with well researched & thoroughly written articles of importance & relevance to all Canadians by Brian Bonner, John Doyle, Hon. Derek Fraser & John Stackhouse."
The National 2013 Syrnick Selection committee included nine eminent Canadian academics and community leaders from the Ukrainian-Canadian community across Canada. From west to east: Nestor Gayowsky, Diplomat; Jars Balan, co-Director at Kule Centre, Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta; Boris Kishchuk, Chair, Canada-Ukraine Centre Inc.; Associate Prof. Roman Yereniuk, University of Manitoba, Director of Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies; Roman Senkus, Director, Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies Publications Program& Managing Editor Encyclopedia of Ukraine & Journal of Ukrainian Studies; Christina Isajiw, Ukrainian Canadian Research & Documentation Centre; Prof. Dominique Arel, University of Ottawa, Chair of Ukrainian Studies; Irene Bell, producer & host of Ukrainian Hour, Radio CHIN; and Bohdan Halkewycz, Board of Directors Shevchenko Foundation.
The John Syrnick Award for Journalism will be presented in Toronto on April 24, 2013 at Massey College on the University of Toronto campus. The Award will be presented by Senator Raynell Andreychuk and Andrew Hladyshevsky Q.C., President of the Shevchenko Foundation. Invited guests will include the media, dignitaries and leaders of the Ukrainian-Canadian community.
This journalism award is named after John Syrnick, the long-time influential editor (1947-70) of Ukrainian Voice, Canada's oldest Ukrainian newspaper. As a prominent community leader, his articles promoted Ukrainian-Canadian solidarity, and the redefinition of Canada as a multi-cultural society. Past recipients: Mark McKinnon, Globe and Mail in 2005; Victor Malarek, W-5, in 2007; the Winnipeg Free Press in 2009; and Frédérick Lavoie, La Presse Montréal, in 2011.
