TORONTO, Aug. 2, 2012 /CNW/ - Neighbourhoods across Toronto are working with Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited (Toronto Hydro), City of Toronto Community Crisis Response Program (CCRP), Toronto Community Housing and Toronto Police Services to brighten their communities by installing energy efficient porch light bulbs.
Thursday, August 2 will kick off this month's events as residents in the Canlish Road neighbourhood team up to "Light the Night" and help make their neighbourhood safer one compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL)at a time.
WHO: Toronto Hydro, City of Toronto Community Crisis Response Program, Toronto Community Housing, Toronto Police Services and local volunteers.
WHAT: Toronto Hydro representatives and local volunteers will be canvassing neighbourhoods to install CFLs on porches and in backyards.
WHEN: There are FOUR Light the Night events happening around Toronto in August:
15 Canlish Road - major intersection is Birchmount and Lawrence (parking at St. Lawrence Martyr Church next to Canlish Road).
3 p.m. - 5 p.m. | |
165-169 Shaugnessy Blvd. (Don Mills/Sheppard)
2 p.m. - 4 p.m. | |
Regent Park (Parliament St. & Gerard St. E)
3 p.m. - 5 p.m. | |
415 Willowdale Ave. (at Finch)
1 p.m. - 3 p.m. | |
WHY: | The objective of the Light the Night program is to brighten vulnerable neighbourhoods and help make them safer, by installing CFLs and encouraging residents to leave them on overnight. A CFL bulb left on between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. costs about a penny a day because they use 75 per cent less electricity* than standard incandescent bulbs. |
Light the Night events are a community based response to safety concerns. This community outreach program aligns safety with energy efficiency by focusing on how valuable lighting can be to our communities. |
