TORONTO, Dec. 6, 2012 /CNW/ - CAW members from across Canada will meet in downtown Toronto at the Sheraton Centre this weekend to discuss and debate current issues facing the union, for the CAW Council.
CAW President Ken Lewenza will address council delegates at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Friday, December 7.
Lewenza's speech will touch on issues such as the recent auto negotiations, the service cuts and negotiations at VIA Rail, the New Union Project with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union, a national inquiry on the missing and murdered Aboriginal women, the hotly contested anti-union Bill C-377 and other concerns facing working people across the country.
The meeting will also feature guest speakers, including Gemini Award winning journalist and communicator Sheila North-Wilson, addressing the need for action on the thousands of missing and murdered Aboriginal women across Canada. A former CBC Manitoba reporter, North-Wilson is the chief communications officer for the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, located in Winnipeg. She will speak on Saturday, December 8 at 11 a.m.
CAW Economist Jim Stanford will also deliver a presentation on the current state of the austerity agenda, in Canada and around the world, on Friday, December 7 at 2:30 p.m.

The CAW will be forming a new union with CEP over the course of this coming year, with the founding convention to be held in Toronto Labour Day weekend 2013.
The CAW represents 193,000 workers in 17 different economic sectors.
