Media advisory: Groups call for sustained infrastructure funding

OTTAWA, Feb. 4, 2013 /CNW/ - The Canada West Foundation will release its report At the Intersection the Case for Sustained and Strategic Public Infrastructure Investment at a press conference in Ottawa at the National Press Theatre on February 6, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. EST.

The first of its kind in Canada, the report shows how sustained investments in public infrastructure are not only necessary for Canada to improve its productivity, increase its trade and maintain our standard of living, but also provide benefits over and above other forms of government spending.

The Canada West Foundation will be joined by representatives of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and Canadian Chamber of Commerce who will discuss the report findings and provide an update on the proposals made by the Municipal Infrastructure Forum (MIF) for Budget 2013.

With Federal infrastructure funding set to expire in 2014 and studies showing that 30% of Canada's municipal infrastructure is at risk, the MIF partners have designed a 20-year roadmap for governments to provide secure, and stable investment that will strengthen our economy and keep pace with Canada's growing needs.

About the Municipal Infrastructure Forum
On February 7, 2012, the members of the Municipal Infrastructure Forum (the Forum) met for its inaugural meeting. The Forum was established by FCM in partnership with key infrastructure stakeholder groups including municipalities, professional associations and business groups from across the country.

The Forum has provided a place for municipalities, professional associations and business and industry organizations to share information, exchange ideas and build consensus on Canada's future municipal infrastructure needs. The Forum has acted as an information-sharing resource for the infrastructure sector as its members provide input to the Government of Canada's process to develop a long-term infrastructure plan.
