Esker Foundation's Splendid Isolation exhibition focuses on Alberta-based photographers.
CALGARY, Jan. 8, 2013 /CNW/ - For its third exhibition, Esker Foundation presents the work of four Alberta-based artists who use photography to tell compelling cultural stories. Comprising of over 140 works, spanning 30 years, the exhibition shows surprising visual similarities between Alberta, Southern Saskatchewan, Cuba, Mexico, Russia, and the United States. The gallery is located in historic Inglewood and the exhibition will run from January 19 to April 21, 2013.
Splendid Isolation features works by Olga Chagaoutdinova, Miruna Dragan, Orest Semchishen, and George Webber, and explores how the photographer can be both a documenter and an author of fiction. Webber and Semchishen's works focus on the prairie landscape in a classic documentary style that captures both the isolation and beauty of rural life. Chagaoutdinova's work shows how domestic life may reflect complex changes occurring in the social and political landscapes of Russia and Cuba. As a perpetual stranger wherever she lives, Dragan is interested in questions of translatability across distances of time, place, and thought. Her use of photography, video, and drawing reinterprets geography and displacement from both a historical and mythological position.
"What first began as an exploration of photo-based work being produced in Alberta, turned into an intense look at the politics of landscape, history and isolation," says Naomi Potter, Artistic Director.
In addition to regular free admission to Esker Foundation, free public programming during Splendid Isolation will include several artist talks, a panel discussion about the implications of photography, an all-ages collage-making workshop, and a chance to create and use your own pinhole camera. Interested participants should visit www.eskerfoundation.com for more information and registration details.
A media tour with Naomi Potter, Artistic Director and Rhonda Barber, Gallery Director will be held on Friday, January 18th at 10 am at Esker Foundation.
