Great Athletes Test Their Mettle at the 2010 Canadian Modern Pentathlon

Riker-Fox and Vakalis are Canadian Champions - Senior Class
RED DEER, AB, July 17 /CNW/ - Josh Riker-Fox (Delacour) and Donna Vakalis (Toronto) are the Canadian champions after taking the senior titles at the Canadian National Modern Pentathlon Championships in Red Deer Alberta today. While Bob Noble (Port Coquitlam) and Jane Rusconi (Maple Ridge) won the Masters Titles. Chris Pietruczuik competed in the Junior Men's Division alongside the Senior Men, and was the overall Points winner of the National Championship.
"There were so many strong performances in the women's division," said Vakalis. "I was thrilled to win but just as impressed to see that we have such a promising contigent of Canadians.
Eleven year old Tamara Booy of Calgary, the youngest athlete competing, said that being part of the Canadian Nationals fun yet tiring because of doing all the events in one day.
"As a sport we are building towards our next World Cup season and towards the Pan Am Games in Guadalajara in October 2011," added Angela Ives, president of Pentathlon Canada. "We had a great range of athletes today and I am confident that Canadian athletes can have even better peformances at these events."
The Relay event will be held tomorrow and 10-12 teams are expected to compete.
This is the second time the Nationals are being held in Red Deer, Alberta. Local athletes include Karis Langvand- Bronze Youth A, Debbie Langvand - Silver Masters (daughter and mother respectively) and Emily Caine - Gold Youth A - who were estatic competing in front of hometown friends and family.
The Canadian Modern Pentathlon Association (www.pentathloncanada.ca) is dedicated to developing high-performance athletes with a focus on competing at the highest levels of international competitions.

Age group categories at the Nationals: SENIOR (greater than 22 years); JUNIOR (19-21 years); YOUTH A (17-18 years); YOUTH B (15-16 years); YOUTH C (13-14 years); YOUTH D (11-12 years); YOUTH E (less than 10 years); MASTERS (Men greater than 30 years, Women greater than 30 years); PARALYMPIC (with documented disability). Athletes may compete in all categories to which they are eligible but must declare a category for medal contention
