Media Advisory - EPR Canada (Extended Producer Responsibility)
VANCOUVER, July 11, 2012 /CNW/ - Are the federal, provincial and territorial governments any closer to their common goal of developing extended producer responsibility (EPR) policies and programs to make brandowners (producers) 100% responsible for their products and packaging once consumers are finished with them?
EPR Canada is a not-for-profit organization that is releasing an EPR Report Card tomorrow which compares and scores the performances of Canada's governments in developing EPR policies and putting them into action.
Why is EPR important? These policies transfer the responsibility to design, operate and pay for waste diversion programs from municipalities and waste authorities to producers and brandowners. Printed paper and packaging, paint, beverage containers, tires and electronics are examples of products for which EPR programs are typical. The goal of EPR is to divert more waste from landfill, save taxpayer dollars and improve product and packaging environmental performance.
News Conference
Media are invited to join EPR Canada members Geoff Love and Christina Seidel, along with guest of honour, BC Environment Minister Terry Lake, and other guests from BC industry and stewardship organizations for the release of the report card scores and recognition of the highest achiever.
