100 years on the couch - Psychoanalysts worldwide celebrate centenary of
International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA)

TORONTO, June 1 /CNW/ - Professor Charles Hanly, Psychoanalyst, Toronto branch of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society and the first Canadian President of the International Psychoanalytic Association, is pleased to welcome distinguished European Experts in psychoanalytic research and therapy to the 36th annual meeting of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society (IPA), June 3 to 6, 2010 at the King Edward Hotel, Toronto. In addition to presentations by some of the world's leading psychoanalysts, the Canadian conference will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the IPA.

The IPA, founded by Sigmund Freud and other eminent psychoanalysts in March 1910, is marking its centenary with a series of events across five continents. The IPA is the world's primary accrediting and regulatory body for psychoanalysis. Its mission is to assure the continued vigour and development of psychoanalysis for the benefit of patients and the community in general. The IPA works in partnership with 70 constituent organizations in 60 countries to support over 12,000 members.

Researchers, master clinicians, journal editors, and prolific writers from Germany, France, and Italy, as well as from the United States and from across Canada will gather in Toronto this weekend to 'Explore the Analytic Art and Science of Healing Mental Suffering'.

Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber, PhD, psychoanalyst, professor and chair of the Department of Psychology, Kassel University, Germany will present her research results from a 'Study of Depression and Transgenerational Trauma'. "In 27 of 33 of the ongoing psychoanalyses, which we have already investigated clinically in detail, we found severe cumulative early traumatizations in the life stories of these patients," she said.

Werner Bohleber PhD, psychoanalyst, and editor of Psyche, publishes on adolescence and young adulthood; transgenerational consequences of the Nazi period and the war on the second and third generation, trauma and violence, terror and terrorism. Dr. Bohleber will be discussing 'The Phenomenon of Adolescent Violence: Traumas, Crises and Dead-Ends in the Development of Youth'.

Paul Denis MD, leading psychoanalyst from the Paris Psychoanalytic Society, past editor, Revue française de psychanalyse, founder of the series Psychoanalysts of Today will explore how the 'Private and Public Theories of the Analyst: Impact on Therapeutic Action'. Publications by this master clinician include studies of depression and phobias in adults and children.

Antonino Ferro MD, training analyst, Italian Psychoanalytical Institute, European editor of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis 2004-2008, respected editor, writer, and clinical presenter will discuss 'Technique and Creativity in Psychoanalysis'. His many publications include 'Psychoanalysis as Therapy and Storytelling' (2006), 'Seeds of Illness Seeds of Recovery: The Genesis of Suffering' and the 'Role of Psychoanalysis' (2005).

The annual meeting of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society and IPA centennial tribute takes place June 3 to 6, 2010 at the King Edward Hotel, 37 King Street East, Toronto.
