Canadians take the 'Race For Dignity Challenge' in support of people affected by HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria in Africa
TORONTO, June 1, 2012 /CNW/ - This Sunday June 3, hundreds of Canadians from across the GTA will take the 'Race For Dignity Challenge' by spinning together on stationary bikes at Yonge-Dundas Square. Participants will cycle in an effort to bring attention to the issue of access to treatment for millions affected by HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria in Africa. The sixth annual spin-a-thon raises funds for the innovative and life-saving work of Canadian medial humanitarian organization, Dignitas International.
The outdoor family-friendly event will feature rousing performances from Toronto's hottest pop/hip-hop trio Nights &Weekends, Juno-winning singer/songwriter Donné Roberts, the passionate DJ L'Oqenz, and energy-pumping dance troupe Fit2Dance. Confirmed speakers include the Honourable Dr. Carolyn Bennett, MP for St. Paul's and Olivia Chow, MP for Trinity-Spadina. All are welcome to attend and support this effort to improve access to health care in Africa.
"Millions lack access to treatment and care for diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria," explains Dr. Michael Schull, Interim President and CEO of Dignitas International. "At a time when health systems are threatened by global cutbacks, Canadians are coming together to show solidarity with patients, health care workers, researchers, and policymakers in sub-Saharan Africa who are fighting for the health of their communities." According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 15 million people die every year from communicable diseases - more than a quarter of these deaths are caused by HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria. With access to treatment and care, these deaths could easily be avoided.
Since 2007, the Race For Dignity Challenge has raised more than $1.4 million for innovative health programs in Africa. Donations can be made at dignitasinternational.org.
