Government Workers Boycott Public Service Week

TORONTO, June 12, 2012 /CNW/ - Public Service Week is an annual event held by federal government departments to show their appreciation for public sector workers and the services they provide. Federal government workers will be boycotting these events because of the Conservative government's attack on the public sector.

Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), Canada's largest federal public sector union will be creating their own events to celebrate Public Service Week without their employer.

"The Conservatives have shown their contempt for Canada's public services by making wide-sweeping cuts to every department", states PSAC Ontario Regional Executive Vice-President Sharon DeSousa. "Why would workers, many of which are in the process of losing their jobs, take part in this hypocrisy?"

The Harper government's slashing of billions of dollars from public services has affected nearly 20,000 workers since the budget was announced 2 months ago.  Workers continue to live in fear and anxiety, as the government announces wave after wave of cuts.
