Media Advisory - TODAY The Yonge Street Mission Honours 3,400 Volunteers by Dressing Up as Superheroes

TORONTO, June 19, 2013 /CNW/ - The Yonge Street Mission staff will get decked out in superhero capes and sacrifice their fashion sense to celebrate their 3,400 volunteers who serve communities in the heart of downtown Toronto.

The annual volunteer appreciation event will be at 306 Gerrard Street East, near the intersection of Gerrard and Parliament from 4:30 to 7:00 pm today.

The dedication of volunteers can do incredible things in the city.  Volunteers give their time and talents to help over 15,000 people living with poverty particularly in St. James Town, Regent Park and Moss Park.  They serve meals, provide health care, and tutor newcomers to Canada.

Alicia Aden, who tutors senior boys in math and science after school at The Mission's Downtown Core Basketball Homework Club is one of many honoured.

“By breaking down socioeconomic, cultural and generational barriers, we can help our city flourish.  I have been so fortunate to have mentors, coaches and teachers who have inspired me to become a better version of myself.  I want to inspire someone else," Aden said.

Toronto-Centre MP Bob Rae shares that, "The Yonge Street Mission has served our community for years and it could not be possible without all of the many dedicated volunteers."
