OTTAWA, June 27, 2013 /CNW/ - Physicians from across Canada will converge in Calgary this August 18 to 21 for the Canadian Medical Association's (CMA) Annual Meeting and General Council. The conference is often called the "parliament" of Canadian medicine because it's where many of this country's doctors gather to discuss and debate policies and recommendations to address the health issues and concerns that matter to the nation.
The event will take place at the Telus Convention Centre. The Telus Convention Centre has luckily escaped the flooding that has ravaged southern Alberta, but the CMA extends its best wishes to all of those affected by the flooding and urges all Canadians to support the Alberta Floods fund by calling 1-800-418-1111 or by giving online at www.redcross.ca.
In keeping with the 146st annual meeting theme, Canada's Physicians: Leadership in Changing Times, Canada's doctors will discuss critical issues that affect the health of Canadians and the health care system. On Monday, August 19 an expert panel will discuss end-of-life issues in Canada, related to palliative care, advance care planning and physician assisted dying. More specifically, delegates will look at the importance of engaging Canadians and physicians in holding discussions on advance directives to enhance uptake in the population.
On Tuesday, August 20, delegates will take part in strategic debates with motions to obtain policy direction on the future of physician resources in Canada and on strategies to engage physicians and patients in optimizing the appropriateness of clinical practice activities.
The Media Guide to CMA's 2013 General Council is now available online at: http://www.cma.ca/media-guide-gc2013. It contains details on the program, the media services available, how to register, and more.
