Media Advisory - Volunteers Raising 10,000 Young Salmon in Port Credit

MISSISSAUGA, ON, March 30, 2012 /CNW/ - Volunteers with the Port Credit Salmon and Trout Association will usher in spring by introducing 10,000 young Chinook salmon into a floating pen in the heart of Port Credit village.

When:	Saturday, March 31 at 11:30 a.m.
Where:	Credit Village Marina, 12 Stavebank Road South, Mississauga
Why:	The 10,000 salmon will be nurtured and fed for about three weeks, allowing their natural instincts to identify the Credit River as home. Once they have 'imprinted' on the river and grown larger, they will be released into Lake Ontario, returning three or four years later to spawn as 20-40 pound adults.
Photo:	Local volunteers and kids will place salmon into buckets and transfer them into a 5 foot by 10 foot, floating pen, located in the river mouth.  Local elected officials will be present, along with 50-100 local residents.

The Port Credit Salmon and Trout Association (PCSTA) was formed in 2010 to build awareness about and to support Lake Ontario's salmon and trout populations.
