Media Advisory - Roncesvalles Residents Upset by Plans to Field Test Cancer Trains in West Toronto
Locals Air Concerns About Pan Am Games Legacy at Public Meeting Tuesday
TORONTO, March 25, 2013 /CNW/ -
Who: | Roncesvalles residents frustrated by the massive expansion of diesel train service along the Georgetown South rail corridor now under construction by Metrolinx. |
What: | Roncesvalles Macdonell Residents' Association Monthly Meeting. |
Where: | Fern Avenue Public School 128 Fern Avenue |
When: | Tuesday, March 26, 2013 |
7 p.m. | |
Why: | The World Health Organization has declared diesel engine exhaust a level one carcinogen. The Union-Pearson Express, a legacy project of the upcoming Pan Am Games, will be using new, imported Tier 4 diesel engines that exist only in prototype and operate nowhere commercially. |
The Georgetown South rail corridor runs from north to east through Roncesvalles and is a defining feature of the neighbourhood. An electric train system now would eliminate the threats posed by an eight-fold increase in diesel train traffic and not require 16 feet tall noise walls running in double columns across large sections of the city. |
