OTTAWA, May 26 /CNW Telbec/ - The Joint Review Panel for the Darlington New Nuclear Power Plant Project invites the public to attend a technical session in Ottawa. The session will be held:
------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date Tuesday, June 22, 2010 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Location Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) - Public Hearing Room 14th floor, 280 Slater Street, Ottawa, Ontario ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Time Beginning at 8:30 a.m. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Joint Review Panel has identifies the following topic areas for the technical session: - Plant parameter envelope and site layout - Atmospheric environment - Groundwater - Aquatic Biota and habitat - Malfunctions and accidents - Waste Management - Environmental Assessment technology
During the session, the Panel will pose questions to Ontario Power Generation, the proponent of the project. The Joint Review Panel is conducting the technical session to assist with its ongoing effort to gather information and documentation required to determine if Ontario Power Generation has sufficiently responded to the Environmental Impact Statement guidelines for this project.
This technical session is for information purposes only and does not provide an opportunity for questions or comments from the public or the media.
The session will be webcast live via the CNSC Web site. Transcripts of the proceedings will be prepared and will be posted on the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 07-05-29525.
The project is a proposal by Ontario Power Generation for the site preparation, construction, operation and decommissioning of up to four new nuclear reactors at its existing Darlington Nuclear site located near Oshawa, Ontario, along the north shore of Lake Ontario, in the Municipality of Clarington. The project is expected to generate approximately 4800 megawatts of electricity for delivery to the Ontario grid.
The Joint Review Panel for the Darlington New Nuclear Power Plant Project is an independent body, mandated by the Minister of the Environment and the President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to assess the environmental effects of the proposed project and review the Application for a Licence to Prepare a Site.
