Fundraising effort to eliminate mortgage at Sundial affordable housing facility

$14.8 million raised, $3.7 million to go

CALGARY, May 7, 2012 /CNW/ - Nexen Inc. in partnership with The Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre (The DI), is hosting an evening to raise awareness and the funding needed to eliminate The DI's mortgage on the Sundial facility. The Sundial includes 119 units - 81 one-bedroom and 38 two-bedroom units - that provide affordable housing to low income Calgarians.

The DI purchased the Sundial in 2009 to help break the cycle of poverty and open doors to a better future. Since then, with the help of a $7 million down payment from the Alberta government, and the generous support of Calgary organizations - Nexen Inc., Enbridge, RBC Foundation, Canadian Oil Sands, Boardwalk Trust, Mother Teresa Endowment Fund, Newalta Corp, Trimac and Canadian Western Bank, among others - more than $14.8 million has been raised. This leaves $3.7 million to be raised for the Sundial to pay off its mortgage. Eliminating the mortgage will enable The DI to fund services and counseling that enable independent living.
