Joint 2012 Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) congress with the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Numerical Weather Prediction and Weather Analysis and Forecasting conferences

MONTREAL, May 28, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The 46^th congress of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS) will take place from May 29 to June 1^st 2012 at the Montréal Hyatt-Regency hotel in Complexe Desjardins in Montréal (Québec). This international congress, with more than 600 scientists in attendance from 11 countries, is organized jointly with the American Meteorological Society (AMS) conferences on weather analysis and numerical prediction. A joint scientific committee has organized the sessions on themes that are common to the two groups.

The theme for 2012 is The Changing Environment and its impact on climate, ocean and weather services and intends to be a reflection on the changes in our environment. Several sectors of activity are impacted by these changes and depend more and more on information provided by observations and numerical simulations of weather, oceanic and climate. This knowledge is now critical to harmonize our development and activities with such important changes. This concerns, for example, land management, weather alerts, air quality and changes in the state of the oceans, critical for fisheries and climate.

This growing interest has consequences on the orientation of our research and its application to socio-economic impact studies. A public conference on Oceans and Climate Change will be presented on Wednesday June 30, from 19:30 to 21:00, by Dr. Denis Gilbert, research scientist at Maurice-Lamontagne institute of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. This conference will cover topics like the sea level rise, acidification of oceans and others related to changes currently occurring in the Arctic.
