Mistissini Cree to host rally and concert against uranium mining
MISTISSINI, EEYOU ISTCHEE, QC, May 30, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The Mistissini Cree will be hosting a community rally and a benefit concert against uranium mining on June 4th, 2012. "The title for our event is simple: Together Against Uranium. Our youth and general population want to convey a message to the provincial and federal government that we do not support uranium development and we do not support Strateco's Matoush project," says Shawn Iserhoff, who is one of the organizers of the event.
Juno Award winning group Ceramony will be performing for community members and visitors. "Paul Robinson, Research Director of the Southwest Research and Information Center in the U.S.A., Dr. Isabelle Gingras, from the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, Ramsey Hart of MiningWatch Canada, and Marc Fafard from Sept-Iles Sans Uranium will be in attendance for the occasion."
"We are anticipating a large crowd from the local area and know that people from across Quebec support us in our opposition to uranium mining," says Iserhoff. The community rally will start at 6 PM on June 4th in front of the Neoskweskau Complex in Mistissini. It will be followed by a benefit concert starting at 7:30 PM. "We invite all citizens to join us on this occasion to oppose uranium development and provide a safer and more clean-environment for our future generations," adds Iserhoff.
The "Together Against Uranium" event will take place the day before the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's begins public hearings (June 5th and 6th in Mistissini, and 7th in Chibougamau), about Strateco's advanced uranium exploration project. The project is proceeding through federal regulatory approvals despite having been rejected by the Mistissini Cree, despite serious deficiencies in the company's environmental impact statement and despite the lack of a decision from the provincial review panel. Over 80 organizations and interveners have signed-up so far to publicly voice their comments, concerns and/or opposition toward this project and uranium development in Eeyou Istchee (http://www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca/eng/commission/hearings/documents_browse/date.cfm?dt=5-Jun-2012). The public can also send their comments to the CCSN ([email protected]) and follow the hearings online with a live webcasts starting at 9 AM on June 5th (http://www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca/eng/commission/webcasts/index.cfm).
