Media Advisory - Metrolinx Noise Wall Plan in West Toronto Critiqued by Award-Winning Architects
Brown & Storey Say the Massive Barriers Offer No Collateral Benefits for the City
TORONTO, May 23, 2013 /CNW/ -
Who: | Kim Storey and James Brown, Brown & Storey Architects Inc.
What: | Breaking Down the Walls, a media presentation detailing shortcomings in the Metrolinx plan to construct 16-foot tall concrete sound barriers through dozens of West Toronto neighbourhoods.
Where: | The Gladstone Hotel (Art Bar)
1214 Queen Street West | ||
When: | Wednesday, May 29, 2013
11 a.m. | ||
Why: | Metrolinx proposes to construct barrier walls along both sides of the Georgetown South rail corridor to mitigate noise from increased train frequency beginning in 2015 with the launch of the Union Pearson Express.
Residents are extremely concerned about the consequences of these walls, which will dominate and harm the visual quality and security of the places where they live. Significant concern has also been expressed about encroachment and visual impact of these barriers on important green spaces, including Sorauren Park and the recently installed West Toronto Railpath, and on natural vegetation throughout the corridor.
Local residents (the Junction Triangle Rail Committee and the Wabash Building Society) are employing Brown & Storey Architects to provide expert advice on secure, green alternatives to the Metrolinx proposal.
