Pure Technologies Project Wins Rehabilitation Project of the Year

CALGARY , Nov. 5 /CNW/ - Pure Technologies Ltd., TSX-V: PUR, has announced that one of its projects has been selected as "2009 Rehabilitation Project of the Year" by Trenchless Technology magazine, a leading industry publication. The project entitled "Renewing WSSC's Water Transmission System" has been recognized for the use of innovative assessment and repair technologies to develop a cost-effective asset management program for a large-diameter prestressed concrete transmission pipeline system. The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission ("WSSC"), its consultants and contractors have all been cited in the award.

Serving nearly 2 million people in Montgomery and Prince George 's counties in Maryland, WSSC is the eighth largest water and wastewater utility in the country, operating and maintaining nearly 5,500 miles of water main lines and more than 5,300 miles of sewer main lines.

In 2008, Pure's subsidiary, Openaka, Inc., was selected as the prime consultant for a multi-year contract by WSSC to provide internal inspection, engineering analysis, and recommendations as part of a major program by the Commission to extend the life of its large-diameter prestressed concrete water transmission pipeline system. In addition to Openaka's inspection and engineering expertise, the program has involved the use of Pure's P-Wave(R) electromagnetic inspection system and the deployment of its SoundPrint(R) AFO acoustic fibre optic monitoring technology. To date, the program has covered approximately 25 miles of the Commission's 77-mile system. Necessary repairs are carried out using an internal carbon-fibre reinforcement system, thereby eliminating the need for costly and disruptive excavation.

"If you just start wholesale replacing pipe, you would be spending a lot more money upfront than you need to do, and you would be giving up useful life of the bulk of the pipeline," said Gary Gumm , chief engineer for WSSC. "Since we can't afford it and since it's not practical to keep the pipes dewatered for an extended period while you are replacing them, this technique allows us to have the pipelines out of service for a much shorter period of time, fix only the pipes that need it and provide a monitoring system to give you some assurance that you're not going to have any problems that are going to show up unexpectedly.

We are in the process of using this on all of our large-diameter PCCP mains," Gumm said. "By June 2013 , we will have inspected and will be monitoring all mains 48 in. and larger. This approach allows us to use our money better, and it allows us to better juggle the resources we have."
