Barriers to consumer market adoption remain despite government incentive and
significant small wind industry advancements

IROQUOIS, ON, Nov. 25 /CNW/ - The recent adoption of the Green Energy Act that made Ontario the first government in Canada to launch a Feed-in Tariff Program guaranteeing the public specific rates for energy generated from renewable sources was met by mixed reviews in the small wind industry.

"In concept this is an excellent program," said Joseph Ianni , CEO of leading Canadian small wind turbine manufacturer ReDriven Power Inc. "In execution, the Ontario Power Authority is looking to reimburse 13.5 cents per kilowatt hour which does not provide a realistic payback period for the consumer on their small wind turbine (usually defined as 100 kilowatt or smaller). In order for this to be a viable program, they need to think about a 40 cent minimum feed in tariff rate."

He also feels in addition to financial incentives there is a need to increase public education on the vast differences between small wind and large wind turbines.

"Small turbines can be very quiet," said Ianni. "Our turbine operates at 59 decibels at 70 feet, no louder than the sound of laughter. We also monitor power production online and perform remote diagnostics without even having to travel to the turbine location."
