ATLANTIC SCHOOL BOARDS EXPLORE 21ST-CENTURY EDUCATION
HALIFAX, Nov. 25 /CNW/ - The Nova Scotia School Boards Association (NSSBA) will host their Atlantic colleagues today through Saturday, November 25-27 at the Delta Halifax, for the Atlantic School Boards Conference.
The theme Abacus 2 Internet: What's Next? will focus on the rapidly changing face of education and what Atlantic Canada is doing to prepare their students for the challenges of the knowledge economy. Over 120 school board members, administrators and partners will explore a vision of public education for the 21st century. "The future is now", says NSSBA President Vic Fleury. "Innovative things are happening all over the world that impact the way teachers teach and students learn. Atlantic Canada needs to develop a vision for 21st-century learning."
The program will start with a keynote presentation from Kevin McCann, VP, MT & L PR. McCann, who specializes in online strategies, founded one of the most successful online movements in Canada - Fair Deal for Newfoundland - which received an international award. His keynote will focus on how the web has changed society, the impact that has on a successful education system and how digital strategies can be used to support challenges. Nada Borden, president of the Canadian School Boards Association, will bring greetings from the national organization.
On Friday, November 26 at 9 a.m., a panel consisting primarily of deputy ministers of education will offer an overview on the vision for 21st-century learning in their province. The panel will be chaired by Halifax Regional School Board Superintendent Carole Olsen. Also on Friday, workshops featuring presenters from the Atlantic region will focus on the areas of student engagement, 21st-century learning, use of technology in the classroom, raising school improvement in a rural school district and challenges in providing francophone education.
The Honourable Marilyn More, Minister of Education, will bring greetings at the banquet on Friday, November 26 at 7 p.m.
The Atlantic School Boards Conference is an annual event, hosted by the respective Atlantic province. It is an excellent opportunity for board members and administrators to share issues and strategies for improving the educational opportunities for our young people.
The NSSBA is the provincial voice for school boards. The association has been serving school boards since 1954.
