Media Advisory - Container Truckers to Protest Actions of Port Metro

VANCOUVER, Nov. 25 /CNW/ - The Vancouver Container Truckers Association (VCTA-CAW Local 2006) is calling for an industry-wide container truck rally on November 27 to protest the actions of Port Metro Vancouver and the failure of the provincial and federal governments to step in to ensure rate stability.

A protest convoy of trucks will leave the truck pull-out on Highway 91N, in North Delta, B.C., following the rally.

In 2005, container truckers were forced into action to stop a vicious race to the bottom. The provincial and federal governments and the Ports agreed to enforce minimum rates and work toward stability but their actions have not stopped undercutting.    

Since then, the Ports have failed to seriously enforce the minimum rates and have now announced three new actions that will hurt all container truck drivers: a new fee of $300 per licence per year to start on January 4, 2011; a lifting of the ban on new licences which can lead to more trucks, less work and fewer owner operators; and a ban on trucks based on age as of April 2011 regardless of whether or not the trucks are legal on BC's roads.

BC Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair will address the rally.

All container truck drivers (union and non-union) are invited to a rally to protest these changes by the Ports and the failure of the federal and provincial governments to step in to help ensure stability.
