On May 27, 2008, the House of Commons passed Bill C-459 as an Act to establish a Ukrainian Famine and Genocide ("Holodomor") Memorial Day and to recognize the Ukrainian Famine in 1932-33 as an act of genocide. Several provincial governments have followed suit.
Last month, Prime Minister Stephen Harper declared the Holomodor to be "one of the great crimes of history," and laid grain at the foot of the national Holodomor memorial in Kyiv (Kiev), Ukraine.
