$1 Million Fundraising Goal For Prostate Cancer Set By Movember Edmonton

EDMONTON, Oct. 26 /CNW/ - As the official start of Movember draws near, Edmontonians are preparing for what is predicted to be the city's most successful Movember to date, all in the name of Prostate Cancer Canada. A city-wide goal of $1 million has been set.

Events will be happening throughout the city to promote Movember. Here is a list of official Movember events:

October 28 - Mo Sista Soiree - Hosted by Capital FM's Kari Skelton at d'Lish Urban Kitchen & Wine Bar on 124st

November 1 - Official start day of Movember - Movember co-founder and CEO, Adam Garone will be in the city at various MO kick-off parties

November 6 - Movember Bonspiel - Held at Granite Curline Club, 16 teams go stone to stone for MO supremacy

November 20 - Oil Kings vs. Spokane Chiefs - Special Jersey Night featuring new Special Oil Kings jerseys with the Prostate Cancer Canada logo and colours; The Oil Kings will be in full Movember style, sporting their very own moustaches

November 26 - 28 - Movember to Marmot with Backside Tours - The trip is currently sold out, but two additional busses are to be released at the start of Movember

December 1 - DJ Fundraiser - Local DJs compete against each other at The Common on 124st

December 3 - Movember Edmonton Gala at Oil City Roadhouse, come out and let your stache shine

Why all the moustaches? It's time men and women understand the facts:

• 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed.
• 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. One new case occurs every 2.7 minutes and a man dies from prostate cancer every 19 minutes.
• Rates of prostate cancer in men are comparable to rates of breast cancer in women.
• The World Health Organization projects that in 2010, cancer will become the leading cause of death globally, surpassing heart disease and stroke.

While Movember is intended to raise awareness of men's health, both men and women are encouraged to participate in the month-long event.
