Trudeau Foundation Announces Latest $225,000 Fellowship Prize Winners
Fellows to Gather Today in Toronto
MONTREAL, Sept. 28 /CNW/ - The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation today announced the latest recipients of the prestigious $225,000 Trudeau Fellowship prize. Trudeau Fellowships are awarded to individuals that set themselves apart through research achievements, creativity and commitment to critical social issues of importance to Canada. The four new 2010 Trudeau Fellows are based in Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal, with backgrounds in political science, law and the arts.
The 2010 Trudeau Fellows are:
- Janine Brodie, University of Alberta: Professor Brodie's career is dedicated to the understanding of poverty in our society. Through her work, she endeavours to identify the tools that will effectively reduce poverty and social inequalities at both local and national levels.
- Sujit Choudhry, University of Toronto: A highly respected Canadian scholar specializing in constitutional law, Choudhry strives to provide counsel for peaceful resolution to civil war-ridden societies.
- Alain-G. Gagnon, Université du Québec à Montréal: Gagnon works to bring justice and stability in the management of national and cultural diversity within federal systems, including in Canada.
- Steven Loft, (Visiting) Ryerson University: A well-known figure of contemporary art in Canada, Mr. Loft will be a Visiting Trudeau Fellow at the Ryerson Gallery and Research Centre. Mr. Loft's work addresses issues of cultural identity, human rights, and communication, and provides new perspectives on Indigenous art and cultural discourse.
"Through the Trudeau Fellowships, we offer concrete support and encouragement for highly respected, often diversely opinionated members of Canada's intellectual trust," said P.-G. Forest, President of the Trudeau Foundation. "Trudeau Fellows possess the talent, drive and potential to anticipate, understand and engage in our most pressing challenges, ultimately helping us build a better Canada."
The 2010 Trudeau Fellows, who will be introduced at a reception in Toronto today, join a growing community of researchers and creators involved in an impressive diversity of fields. Nominations are put forward by an extensive nomination network in Canada and abroad, and an independent jury of eminent researchers and intellectuals proposes to the Board of Directors a list of Fellows, based on their leadership qualities, productivity, reputation and demonstrated ability to communicate. In most cases, Trudeau Fellows are not aware that they have been nominated until they receive a call from the Foundation.
