EDMONTON, March 2, 2016 /CNW/ - The Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency (AEMERA) is collaborating with Inside Education to promote environmental education and leadership collaboration for Alberta K-12 schools.
Inside Education is a charitable education society that provides programs to enable Canadian students and teachers to better understand the science, technology and issues related to our environment and natural resources. The partnership between Inside Education and AEMERA will help thousands of Alberta's students and teachers to understand best practices in monitoring water, air quality, biodiversity and land. In addition, students and teachers will learn about the importance – and ultimate benefits – of braiding indigenous knowledge with western science in environmental studies, research and decision-making.
"At AEMERA we believe that collaboration makes our work stronger and more rigorous. We pride ourselves on building strong relationships with stakeholders and partners, such as Inside Education," said Jay Nagendran, President and CEO of AEMERA. "As we continue to find meaningful ways to communicate and share our environmental monitoring, evaluation and reporting work with diverse audiences across Alberta and beyond, mutually beneficial partnership's such as this are extremely important."
The partnership will contribute to overall understanding of Alberta's environment – how it works, what AEMERA monitors and why. Students and teachers will use this knowledge to think critically about the environment and to make well-informed decisions.
"Through over thirty years working with invaluable partners, we have introduced and engaged a generation of students in the science and innovation that is fundamental for them to become stewards of our natural resources and environment," said Steve McIsaac, Executive Director of Inside Education. "We are delighted to partner with AEMERA to enhance this learning and, together, we will continue to inspire a new generation of students to discover their roles in shaping our province."
Through the partnership, AEMERA has been paired with two schools in the oil sands region – Athabasca Delta Community School in Fort Chipewyan and Westwood Community High School in Fort McMurray – for Inside Education's upcoming Navigate Youth Water and Environmental Leadership Summit (navig8.ca). Navigate is an opportunity for students and teachers to examine water in Alberta from many different perspectives and to then lead practical projects to advance water education and environmental leadership in their schools and communities.
Additionally, Inside Education will deliver several education programs and initiatives with support from AEMERA in 2016. These include an Energy Innovations and Climate Change teacher education program, a Species at Risk Education Program and the development of other learning resources and tools.
