Calgary's only private, all-boys school set to open this fall
Founder of the acclaimed Edge School puts boys' unique educational needs front and centre as inaugural Head of School at North Point.
CALGARY, July 29, 2015 /CNW/ - With a long track record of educational innovation and excellence as a teacher, administrator and coach, Brent Devost is at it again. This time, turning his focus to the newly established North Point School for Boys. The only all-boys, private school in our city has a unique mandate: to help boys love learning.
"North Point is about recognizing that boys may need to be taught in a different way," says Devost. "When we can challenge and motivate our students by playing off their natural strengths and interests, we can help them excel."
This philosophy is grounded in recent research which shows that boys are falling behind in classroom achievement, numbers going on to post-secondary and numbers getting jobs out of university.
"This points to an education system that isn't ideally designed with boys' learning styles and behavioural needs in mind," says school founder Kim Pirie Cook, speaking of the mainstream, lecture-based model of most classrooms.
The solution? A learning environment that allows boys to stretch their minds, bodies and limits through an interactive, hands-on model with an emphasis on outdoor education, technology and experiential learning.
"Boys tend to be kinesthetic learners who learn by moving, exploring, experimenting and basically—by doing," says Cook, adding that the school's proximity to incredible amenities such as Spruce Meadows, Leighton Art Centre and Cardel Rec South provides a world of opportunities for active learners. As will the oversight of Brent Devost.
Cook says, "Brent Devost's vision and leadership over the years has helped so many kids achieve their goals and dreams, we're thrilled to have him on board at North Point."
North Point School welcomes all boys who are curious, enthusiastic and would benefit from an active learning environment. It is for students who want to achieve their personal best academically, while exploring and interacting with the world around them. The school is currently taking enrolment applications for grades K-8, for the 2015/2016 school year.
