TORONTO, April 12, 2017 /CNW/ - Jake Tapper, CNN's chief Washington correspondent and daily anchor of The Lead with Jake Tapper, will be honoured with this year's CJF Tribute, which recognizes media luminaries who uphold the highest standards of excellence and inspire working journalists around the world. The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) will present the honour at its annual CJF Awards on June 8 at The Fairmont Royal York in Toronto.
"When we looked this year at celebrating a standout honouree, we knew the winner would be a journalist whose work was a highlight of the vicious U.S. election cycle," says David Walmsley, incoming chair of the CJF board and editor-in-chief of The Globe and Mail. "Jake Tapper is this year's honouree because he proved television news can be intelligent, rigorous—and fair."
In addition to The Lead, which covers news in the U.S. and around the world, Tapper hosts CNN's Sunday morning show, State of the Union, where he interviews newsmakers on politics and policy. Known for his relentless questioning to combat spin and fake news, his interviews have gone viral and inspired sketches on Saturday Night Live.
Tapper, 48, has reported in the U.S. capital for more than 15 years. Tapper lent his political expertise to CNN's 2016 election coverage and moderated two Republican presidential primary debates. On election night, Tapper played a pivotal role in the network's coverage and provided analysis on projections throughout the evening. For his efforts, his 2016 election coverage has been recognized with a number of awards. In addition to his journalism, Tapper has authored three books: his most recent is The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor (2012) about U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
Prior to joining CNN in 2013, Tapper was with ABC News for nine years, where he was also senior White House correspondent. Tapper has also been Washington correspondent and national correspondent for Salon.com. He has drawn caricatures and illustrations for the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times, and his comic strip, "Capitol Hell," appeared in Roll Call from 1994 to 2003.
Past CJF Tribute honourees include Tina Brown, former New Yorker and Vanity Fair editor; Harry Evans, former editor of The Sunday Times; Malcolm Gladwell, author and staff writer for The New Yorker; Peter Jennings (posthumously), anchor and senior editor of ABC's World News Tonight; Robert MacNeil, news anchor and co-creator of The MacNeil/Lehrer Report; Morley Safer, CBS News correspondent; and Graydon Carter, editor of Vanity Fair.
The CJF Awards is the occasion when more than 600 of the country's media and business luminaries celebrate excellence in journalism by honouring those who have made significant contributions to journalism and by recognizing emerging talent. Canadian Lyse Doucet, a senior presenter with the BBC and its chief international correspondent, will host the gala.
Other awards to be presented include: the CJF Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism (awarded in two categories, large media and small media), the Lifetime Achievement Award, the CJF Innovation Award, The Landsberg Award, the CJF-CBC Indigenous Journalism Fellowships, the Greg Clark Award, the Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award, the William Southam Journalism Fellowships, the Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy and the Martin Wise Goodman Canadian Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University.
