TORONTO, May 19 /CNW/ - At The Bagg Group, an Ontario-wide staffing agency, employees practice retail therapy on company time. They shop for toys, books, and clothes, accompanied by agency CEO Geoff Bagg who splits the bill with them. And when their budget is spent, they hand over their purchases to The Scott Mission, and return to the office energized by the experience.
This innovative approach to incorporating philanthropy into work time has won accolades from the staffing industry nationwide. The Bagg Group was just named the recipient of this year's Community Service Award of the Association of Canadian Search, Employment and Staffing Services (ACSESS). It's the second time the company has won the award.
At The Bagg Group, giving back isn't just corporate goodwill, it's part of the corporate DNA. "This company was founded on the deeply held belief that you succeed when you help others succeed. That principle is the reason we have thrived through good and tough times for almost 40 years," says Mr. Bagg whose company provides permanent, contract and temporary recruiting services.
Having interviewed thousands of job-seekers over the decades, The Bagg Group recruiters know what it takes to make employees happy and productive. And it's not just money, says Mr. Bagg from his Toronto office. The most loyal employees are those who work for organizations which support their efforts to make a difference to their company, and to their community, he says.
The Bagg Group does just that. Staff continuously start and support various charitable initiatives. Most recently, Bagg employees helped send Geoff Bagg and his teen son to Honduras to do volunteer work and donate a house to one of the poorest families in a region ravished by poverty and neglect.
As for the company's annual shopping spree for the adopt-a-family program organized by the Toronto-based Scott Mission every year at Christmas, Mr. Bagg said it is proof of how community service is a gift for those who practice it. "We all have a great time. Thinking of new and more ways we can help others fuels our creativity as a group, and ends us boosting our own productivity."
