TORONTO, Feb. 18, 2016 /CNW/ - Eduardo Lima is this year's winner of the Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award, presented by The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) and The Canadian Press.
Lima, a Toronto-based freelance photojournalist who is a regular contributor to Corbis Images and Metroland Media and who has been published in the Toronto Star and Le Monde, will be joining The Canadian Press Toronto head office for a six-week internship.
"I'm thrilled and honoured for the opportunity to work at The Canadian Press alongside their great team of photojournalists," says Lima. "I would like to gain a better understanding of what Canadian editors are seeking from photographers and expand my technical skills as I cover a wide range of assignments. I am looking forward to photographing sports such as professional baseball or hockey, which I am less familiar with as I grew up in Latin America. I hope that the daily challenges and the pressure I will face during the six-week internship will push me to become a better photojournalist. "
The jury reviewed a number of submissions from early-career photojournalists before selecting Lima, whose portfolio reflected a range of subjects.
"While there were a number of strong entries for this award, Eduardo Lima has an excellent eye for action in sports and emotion in other situations," says Fred Chartrand, a jury member who is a freelancer and former long-time staff photographer for The Canadian Press. "His portfolio tells you he loves what he does. It looks like he has what it takes to think quickly on his feet but also takes the time to read and anticipate the special moments that make for a great image. Eduardo also shows he loves to play with light and executes this well in his portraits of people. He would be an excellent addition to any team of photojournalists."
Lima will be presented with the award at the CJF Awards on June 16, 2016 at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto.

About the Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award
The Canadian Journalism Foundation and The Canadian Press teamed up in 2009 to launch a new photojournalism award in memory of Tom Hanson, an award-winning photographer who travelled around the world and across the country, shooting some of the most iconic news and sports images of his time. The Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award offers a six-week paid internship at The Canadian Press head office in Toronto for a photojournalist in the early stages of his or her career.
