Media Advisory - 200 Canadian scholars and Royal Society of Canada speaking out against Site C mega dam

Land being cleared for $8.3 billion British Columbia dam before approvals process complete

OTTAWA, May 20, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - A group of leading Canadian scholars has raised serious concerns regarding the process used to approve the mega dam called Site C. The Royal Society has taken the unusual step of issuing an additional statement of concern.

After reviewing the decision-making process for Site C, the scholars' research concluded that there were significant inadequacies, at odds with the federal government's commitments to reconciliation with First Nations and evidence-based decision-making with scientific integrity.

The concerns include First Nation rights under Treaty No. 8., the unprecedented number and scope of significant adverse environmental effects, and lacking or under-resourced governmental review processes. The 200 scholars are calling for four actions, which will be outlined.
