About the ByWard Market
The ByWard Market is where Ottawa was born. Established by Lt-Col. John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and largest public markets. The legendary builder of the Rideau Canal; Lt-Colonel. By himself laid out the street plan of the Market, designating George and York Streets to be extra wide to accommodate the horse-drawn carriages that brought foodstuffs to the market every day.
Today, the ByWard Market is the original downtown. Open seven days a week, 363 days a year, this is where people come to be a part of it all.

About Downtown Rideau
The importance of Downtown Rideau today as Ottawa's Arts & Theatre District and retail centre stems from its historic role as the primary commercial district of early Ottawa. The proximity of Downtown Rideau's main street- Rideau Street- to many of the capital's local and national landmarks and attractions further enhances Downtown Rideau's role as the centre of activity in the City of Ottawa.
