HAMILTON, ON, March 31, 2016 /CNW/ - It takes only one event to showcase the many great things happening in a community, and on Sunday, April 3rd, the 122nd Around the Bay Road Race will be that event for Hamilton.
The Runners
Three runners – Bruce Smith, Ron Lariviere and Nancy Cole – will be lauded by the running community for participating in their 26th Bay Race run. Daniel Kipkoech and previous race winners Dayna Pidhoresky and Krista Duchene are among this year's list of who to watch.
The Researchers and Rescuers
All funds raised by Around the Bay support research and equipment purchases at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. Fundraising teams will be out running, walking and showing their spirit on Race Day. Drs. Richard and Tamar Packer – of Packers' Trackers fundraising team – will be out with their team of 57 fundraisers. Captain Steve Berry of Hamilton Fire, Deputy Chief Ken Weatherill of Hamilton Police, along with Darren Sousa of Hamilton Paramedics will continue a friendly rivalry along the race route and in the donation tally. Sera Filice-Armenio, from St. Joe's Foundation, will reveal fundraising progress in support of hope, healing and discovery at St. Joseph's. St. Joseph's Foundation aspires to bring in a record-breaking $480,000 through this year's race.
The Reptiles
Race participants will detour around the infamous hill on Valley Inn Road due to construction on the nearby rail bridge. Several species of turtle in the Hamilton Harbour are usually among the lesser-known Bay Race spectators but, due to construction, won't be in the area this year. The Canadian National (CN) Railway Company, a Bay Race sponsor and the construction project lead, confirm the reptiles have been moved as part of ongoing preservation efforts in collaboration with Royal Botanical Gardens.
