Veteran Labour and Employment Lawyer Brings Extensive Education and Tech Experience
LONDON, ON, Sept. 14, 2017 /CNW/ - Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP is pleased to announce that Rusty McLay has joined the firm's London office as a Senior Partner effective September 5. McLay will boost the firm's capacity to serve its Southwestern Ontario clients, particularly those in the post-secondary education and technology sectors.
McLay has 22 years of experience as a management-side labour and employment lawyer. He comes to the firm from Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning where he was Chief Administrative Officer and General Counsel. For almost a decade, he has also served in various roles at tech innovator BlackBerry, including as Vice President, Legal.
According to McLay, responding to the Ontario government's proposed changes to the Employment Standards Act (ESA) will be the number one item on every employer's to do list in the coming year.
"The pending ESA changes, the first in a generation, will require every employer to take a fresh look at their organizational design and how work is assigned," said McLay. "While the proposed increase in minimum wage has garnered a lot of attention, the equal work provisions will likely end up having the biggest impact on many workplaces."
"The post-secondary education sector in particular relies on thousands of part-time employees. Unless this model is changed, the sector will face hundreds of millions in additional remuneration," he said.
For technology companies, McLay says that the competition for talent will continue to be a driving factor in companies' ability to scale up and excel in a competitive global environment.
"This competitive reality touches everything – from recruitment strategy and immigration policy changes to the ability to negotiate contracts with sought-after talent due to non-competes and IP protection," he said.
In the London office, Rusty McLay joins partners Frank Angeletti, Peter Thorup, Casey Dockendorff, Cheryl Rovis, and Brian MacDonald as well as associate Danny Parker in providing legal counsel and representation to a wide variety of clients, including universities, colleges, hospitals, municipalities, transit authorities, construction, manufacturing and service companies and the broader public sector.
