Université Laval's proposal to the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology

QUÉBEC CITY, le 14 déc. 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Due to the impossibility of carrying out the unrealistic and retroactive cuts the government of Québec intends to impose on universities, Université Laval rector Denis Brière proposes that Minister Pierre Duchesne keep the $696 million promised between now and 2018 while cancelling, in a responsible and pragmatic manner, the $124 million in retroactive cuts announced for 2012-2013 as well as those planned for 2013-2014. Laval's proposal is based on the fact that the university cannot accept a plan that jeopardizes the education of currently enrolled students in exchange for an investment that will not come to term until 2018. This way forward is based on responsible management principles. Our proposal represents a viable approach and demonstrates our will to help the government solve the financial problems facing our society.

Université Laval continues, as it has for years, to carefully manage its operations and it is wary of the potentially negative impacts of certain government decisions on the education its students receive. The rector's proposal will help the summit to be held by the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology in February 2013 to unfold in a calmer atmosphere free of conditions and fears, and address the future of higher education and key management issues like university funding, access to education, and the role of cegeps and universities in the development of our society.
