- MEDIA ALERT - MONTREAL TO HOST CYBER GAMES' 10TH ANNIVERSARY
Samsung continues its commitment to e-sports as official sponsor of one of Canada's largest-ever gaming competitions
TORONTO, Sept. 1 /CNW/ - This Labour Day weekend, the World Cyber Games (WCG) Canadian Championship returns to Montreal - the very hub of Canada's digital entertainment industry - to celebrate its 10th anniversary. As the main sponsor, Samsung Electronics Canada will provide the official PC monitors and televisions for the event.
This year's competition will be the largest WCG Canadian Championship ever held, with more than 400 players expected to participate. The event will feature four popular game titles: Counter-Strike 1.6 (PC), FIFA 2010 (PC), Guitar Hero 5 (XBOX 360) and Forza Motorsport 3 (XBOX 360). Players may also compete in non-official tournaments including newly released Starcraft II, Counter-Strike Source, Quake Live and Team Fortress II.
Players will compete for a coveted spot on Team Canada and a chance to represent their country at the WCG Grand Final in Los Angeles from September 30 to October 3, 2010.
Some of this year's thrilling highlights include:
- Quebec native and 2008 silver medalist Manon Desbiens, one of the best virtual guitarists in the country, returns to competition following a maternity leave in 2009.
- Canadian champions and Ontario natives Daniel Piacampo (Guitar Hero) and Matt Wood (FIFA) will be in Montreal to defend their national titles.
- 2008 Canadian Champion, Nic Brownrigg, will make his return this year as a top contender in the Forza Motorsport 3 tournament.
WCG is the world's largest and most inclusive international video and computer games competition, held annually since 2000, and is the only single e-sports event with competitions on all six continents. Canada is currently ranked 9th in the world out of 83 participating countries.
