/R E P E A T -- Media Advisory - Government of Canada celebrates the national historic significance of the Examination Unit/

OTTAWA, ON, Aug. 4, 2022 /CNW/ - The Honourable Mona Fortier, Member of Parliament for Ottawa Vanier, will participate in a Parks Canada and Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque unveiling ceremony to commemorate the historic significance of the Examination Unit.

Canada's first cryptographic bureau, the Examination Unit (XU), began operation during the Second World War. The XU contributed to Allied efforts, breaking the codes and ciphers used in secret military and diplomatic communications. Operating the XU within a wartime alliance system positioned Canada for the future. During the early years of the Cold War, Canada entered into an unprecedented peacetime signals intelligence sharing system, establishing the foundations for today's Five Eyes alliance.

The Honourable Mona Fortier will make the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada.
