OTTAWA, ON, Dec. 1, 2023 /CNW/ - Humanity & Inclusion Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Landmine Foundation and Mines Action Canada, invites media representatives to the ceremony of the Monument to the Unknown Civilian. The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Canada's Minister of International Development, and Her Excellency Yuliya Kovaliv, Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada, will be speaking.
This temporary memorial, inspired by the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, honors the victims killed and wounded in armed conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine and elsewhere, but also condemns the bombings that increasingly take place in cities. In Canada, the Monument will be unveiled for the first time at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. A similar ceremony took place last year for the Dublin conference, where Canada and 82 other States adopted on November 18 an international agreement aimed at better protecting civilians against the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.
An official photo op will follow the ceremony at the Museum. Anne Delorme, Executive Director of Humanity & Inclusion Canada, will be available for media interviews.
Next, the Hon. Mélanie Joly, Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, will give a speech, followed by a panel discussion on the evolution of Canadian leadership in the protection of Ottawa Treaty civilians. This will be followed by a panel discussion with the Hon. Mélanie Joly, Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, who will deliver a speech. The panel will focus on the evolution of Canadian leadership in civilian protection from the Ottawa Treaty to the present day. We are honoured by the participation of : the Hon. Lloyd Axworthy, former Minister of Foreign Affairs; the Hon. Peter MacKay, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Defence; Professor Jennifer Welsh, Canada 150 Research Chair in Global Governance and Security at McGill University; and Nujeen Mustafa, advocate for the rights of refugees and people with disabilities.
