/R E P E A T -- Media Advisory: Interview/photo opportunity - Toronto students use the principles of art & STEM to give back to local food bank/
TORONTO, Feb. 25, 2019 /CNW/ - On February 27, Grade 5 students at Havergal College – an independent all-girls' school based in Toronto – are taking part in a unique initiative to help decrease hunger and fight poverty in their North Toronto community.
Inspired by international, non-profit design and build competition Canstruction®, Grade 5 students are using the principles of art and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), along with problem solving skills, to create structures out of unopened canned and packaged food items, which will then be donated to the North York Harvest Food Bank.
Students will carry out their builds, with support from architects at local design firm Diamond Schmitt Architects. Havergal's project is registered with Canstruction® Toronto and the school worked closely with Peter's No Frills® Toronto to purchase their food items.
Students have been working on the project since last fall by developing the concepts for their structures, undertaking the math and engineering calculations to craft their designs, raising funds to purchase their food items and visiting the North York Harvest Food Bank to better understand how this important community service operates.
Media are invited to visit Havergal to speak with the Grade 5 students, watch their sculptures come to life and learn more about how their work will support the local community.
