$10 Million Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund Announces 2011 Grant Recipients

CALGARY, Jan. 24, 2012 /CNW/ - Daryl K. Seaman's dedication to providing youth with opportunities to participate in hockey and sports lives on through the $10 million Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund at The Calgary Foundation. The Fund was established to provide annual support to all aspects of amateur ice hockey and registered amateur athletic associations in Canada.

For the 2011 cycle, the Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund granted over $270,000 in support of six organizations, including the Village of Longview/ARC Society, Calgary Police Service/Hockey Calgary, Spray Lake Sawmills Recreation Park Society, Alberta Theatre Projects, Athol Murray College of Notre Dame and Hockey Canada. Application forms for the 2012 granting cycle will be available in the spring at thecalgaryfoundation.org

The Fund granted $11,500 to the Hockey Calgary/Calgary Police Service Power Play Program. The program is designed to provide free hockey instruction to youth facing cultural or financial hurdles, including many new immigrant children. "These youth face barriers in learning to play our beloved Canadian game of hockey, and through our program are able to do so free of charge" explained Constable Rayn Boyko of the Calgary Police Service. "This grant will be used to buy new helmets and to assist with transportation to and from the arena."

The Village of Longview received $35,000 for Phase 2 of the Longview Xtreme Makeover Rink Upgrade, which will renovate the current outdoor rink to a multi-season and multi-use recreational facility. The new facility will feature a concrete pad, basketball and tennis area, skate park equipment, and year-round rink accessibility. "The youth in and around our small municipality will be able to utilize this new summer activity area, which will greatly enhance our community and also assist in promoting a healthy, active lifestyle for our youth" commented Mayor of Longview, Ivor McCorquindale.

Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund ensures his passion for amateur hockey and sport leaves a lasting legacy from coast to coast. The Fund grants yearly and we look forward to receiving applications from all across the country."

Grants from the Daryl K Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund will support:

• all aspects of amateur ice hockey in Canada on a nation-wide basis
• registered Canadian amateur athletic association
• other general charitable purposes as the Board of Directors of The Calgary Foundation shall determine
