10th anniversary edition of the FL Fuller Landau Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race and Festival saw over 400 paddlers take to the water Français
MONTRÉAL, Sept. 21, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - The 10th edition of the FL Fuller Landau Dragon Boat Race & Festival, in support of the Cedars Cancer Institute's CanSupport program, took place Saturday at Parc Père-Marquette in Lachine and saw over 400 participants and spectators attend. The cool weather of the past week turned around and warmed up for the event that raised over $475,000 thanks to the support of hundreds of individual donations.
The paddlers' village was buzzing with enthusiasm as teams took part in three qualifying races before lunch and a final race in the afternoon. However, winning on the water wasn't the only goal, as each boat strove to outdo each other's fundraising totals, with top teams raising over $45,000 in support of the Cedars Cancer Institute at McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).
This year's 10th anniversary edition was augmented with a tent dedicated to showcasing photos from the past 10 years, as well as a Wall of Hope that saw attendees writing messages of hope on a wall that will be permanently placed in the new MUHC hospital's Cancer Center.
The participants and general public also had the opportunity to meet and chat with Alexia Calvillo who, along with her husband and former Alouette Quarterback, Anthony Calvillo, are event spokespeople.
Funds raised will be donated to the Cedars Cancer Institute's CanSupport program, which provides psychological, practical, and humanitarian assistance, as well as support services for cancer patients at the McGill University Health Centre.
Founded in 2006, the Dragon Boat Race & Festival began with six boats and $12,000 raised, and has grown to an event of over 30 boats with over $4-milliion raised to date. Accounting firm FL Fuller Landau has been a major sponsor of the festival since 2008, and prides themselves on not only being title sponsors, but active participants.
