2014 Canadian statistics on cancer - Skin Cancer in Quebec: a Wake-up Call
MONTREAL, May 29, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - The Save Your Skin Foundation finds great cause for alarm in the high number of cases of melanoma and other skin cancers expected to be diagnosed in Quebec in 2014, according to recent canadian statistical data on cancer. The incidence and mortality rates for melanoma are clearly on the rise. Quebec hosts less than 25% of the canadian populace, yet, it accounts for nearly 40% of diagnosed skin cancers in Canada.
"In Quebec, the creation of preventive programs in schools geared towards mobilizing youths to save their skins could lead to the majority of these cancer cases being avoided." claims Félix-Antoine Léveillé, regional director for the Quebec branch of the Save Your Skin Foundation.
"Heedless of the grave impact it can have on their health, Quebeckers often recklessly expose themselves to the sun's UV rays without adequate protection, and some make abusive use of tanning salons without knowledge of the consequences to their health.", added Dr Joel Claveau, dermatologist, Melanoma and Skin Cancer Clinic, CHU of Québec, Hôpital Hôtel-Dieu de Québec.
