TORONTO, May 16, 2013 /CNW/ - "Get on with it. Make the most of it. And take better care of our money while you're at it." That's the advice of 300 community leaders that CivicAction delivered today to Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) elected officials and Metrolinx.
The 300 community leaders have four key recommendations on how to invest in our region's future through an expanded transportation network:
The leaders developed these views at the CivicAction Forum: Our Region, Our Move last month. With Metrolinx set to share its strategy on how to fund the rest of The Big Move regional transportation plan by June 1, politicians should get ready to move.
"The views shared by these leaders demonstrate great public desire for action on our congestion crisis," said CivicAction Chair John Tory. "People are ready to be part of the solution so long as they see that the money is spent well, and with maximum bang for the buck."
At the CivicAction Forum, CivicAction and its Regional Transportation Champions and Regional Co-Captains launched its "Pledge to Get a Move On," the second phase of the Your32 regional transportation campaign. More than 1,000 residents and close to 50 politicians have already pledged at your32.com to support funding for transportation expansion that meets these terms: Dedicated; Efficient; Transparent & Accountable; Regional; Fair; and Sustainable.
"The community leaders' recommendations will provide direction to elected officials at all levels as they decide how to invest in a better system," explained Mitzie Hunter, Chief Executive Officer of CivicAction. "We want elected officials to join us and their constituents in 'getting a move on' and build the network that will enable our region's growth and prosperity."
