MONTREAL, July 17, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Hydro-Québec is pleased to announce that 400,000 energy-guzzling fridges and freezers have now been picked up for recycling by the RECYC-FRIGO program. Marc-André Roy of the borough of Ville Marie in Montréal, owner of the 400,000th appliance, received a basket of energy-saving products from Maria Vaccaro, Hydro-Québec's Manager - Energy Efficiency - Residential Customers.
Older, more inefficient
Simply by getting rid of his old fridge, Mr. Roy is saving electricity. That's because a fridge over 10 years old can use up to 4.8 times more electricity than a new ENERGY STAR© model.
Good for the environment
In addition, the appliances picked up under the RECYC-FRIGO program are recycled in keeping with environmental regulations.
Easy as can be
To benefit from the RECYC-FRIGO program, participants must be Québec residents and own the appliances to be recycled. Appliances must be at least 10 years old, plugged in and running. They must also be accessible and moveable and have a capacity of 10-25 cu. ft. A maximum of three appliances per owner will be picked up.
If the appliances meet these criteria, the owner makes an appointment for pickup by filling in a form at www.hydroquebec.com/RECYC-FRIGO or calling 1 855-668-1247. The free pickup will be done by a specialized transportation company, and the owner will receive a cheque in the mail for $30 per appliance within three weeks.
Owners of working appliances less than 10 years old can also get rid of them. Hydro-Québec suggests calling a local community agency or social economy organization, which will pass it on to a household in need.
