Hospital challenges students to come up with mobile app to improve patient experience
BRAMPTON and ETOBICOKE, ON, Nov. 3, 2014 /CNW/ - William Osler Health System (Osler) is calling on high school, undergrad and post-graduate students and asking for 48 hours of their time to develop an innovative Android mobile app to improve the patient experience at Osler's hospitals. In return, Osler will select one winning app and its development team will be awarded with a $10,000 prize.
Osler's second annual national student app contest will attract teams of students from across the country in an exciting 'hackathon' style event. The contest will run from 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 14 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 16 and will give students the choice of coding anywhere, including from one of Osler's hospitals.
"We are thrilled to be bringing this competition back to students again, and excited about seeing the mobile app ideas that could positively impact the care experience at Osler hospitals in so many ways," said Matthew Anderson, Osler President and CEO. "The winning app will have the potential to help the thousands of people who walk through the doors of our hospitals every day."
Last year's contest was one of the first of its kind in Canada. The winning entry, HosNav, uses approaches to wayfinding and diagnostic imaging prep to help transform the Osler hospital experience and provide better, more personalized service for both patients and their families.
"As people begin to rely increasingly on information provided through their mobile devices, we recognize that we have an unprecedented opportunity to help patients and families better navigate their care experience while they are with us," said Susan deRyk, Joint Vice-President, Patient Experience, Communications and Strategy with the Central West Community Care Access Centre (CCAC), Headwaters Health Care Centre (HHCC) and Osler. "We are looking forward to seeing the results of the student's hard work and sharing the winning app with the community."
The winner of this year's contest will be selected and announced in mid-December, after Osler's judging panel has reviewed and evaluated the apps. The prize money for this year's contest has been generously donated by Fieldpoint, a software and service management provider located in Oakville, Ontario.
