TORONTO, Sept. 30, 2015 /CNW/ - On Saturday, September 26, The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation held its fifth annual Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer event in Toronto, and in the process, established two Guinness World Records.
The Guinness World Records set were most participants in a one-day fundraising road hockey event (1,333) and most funds raised by a one-day fundraising road hockey event ($2.2 million and counting. Guinness will continue to monitor while funds continue to roll in). Tavia Levy from the New York Guinness World Records office was on hand to observe the Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer event, confirm the numbers and present awards for the two extraordinary feats.
"There is something uniquely Canadian about playing road hockey on a perfect September day," said Paul Alofs, President & CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. "We thank all of the players, their donors, the volunteers and our sponsors for helping us achieve these Guinness World Records, and for making our fifth Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer event so amazing. The funds raised will help The Princess Margaret, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world, continue to lead the way in Personalized Cancer Medicine research."
Shawn Burt, the Chief Hockey Officer at The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, proudly stated, "Having the extraordinary support of 1,333 fundraisers on 141 teams was a true game-changer for Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer, and we thank all of the participants for taking part in this World Record event. Everyone's support was so important, and will help cancer patients in Toronto, across Canada and around the world."
He added, "It was a record-setting day in every conceivable way."
