The 2009 Commercialization of Agricultural Technology Competition Award winners are:
CAT Competition $250,000 1st Place Award Winner ----------------------------------------------- Daiya Foods, Vancouver, BC Manufacturing of a Non-Dairy Slice From Natural Agricultural Plant Ingredients Daiya Foods has been conducting research and development of a new technology platform that has the potential of creating soft style non- dairy slice. These hybrid slices can substitute for almost every popular variety of dairy-based equivalents. Daiya Foods has achieved very promising results in bench top testing and would like to complete the R&D bench top tests and scale up the process at its facility in Vancouver. CAT Competition $150,000 2nd Place Award Winner ----------------------------------------------- L.W. Truscott Farms, Creston, BC JUICE - FABRICATION OF INNOVATIVE JUICE PROCESSORS Gary & Susan Snow (L.W. Truscott Farms) are cherry growers in Creston, B.C. Currently, 20% of their crops are being thrown away as culls in landfills and on the orchard floor. Much of this fruit is useable for value-added products. Because of the current waste of culled fruit and the consumers demand for healthy foods they have fabricated a juice processor to create food products that are a source of anthocyanins and antioxidants. The utilization of culled fruit would reduce waste, create jobs in Creston, and provide financial stability to the farmers. CAT Competition $100,000 3rd Place Award Winners ------------------------------------------------ AgriForest Biotech Ltd., Kelowna, BC Sunlight-Based Plant Micro-propagation for Commercial Production of Agricultural and Horticultural Crops AgriForest Biotech Ltd.'s main objective is to establish a sunlight- based plant micro-propagation facility with optimized environmental conditions. This will benefit the large-scale production of several important commercial plant varieties for the agriculture and horticulture industries. The commercial application of this technology can produce thousands of clones within a year at a significantly lower cost than conventional tissue culture micro-propagation. Innovative Food Systems, Princeton, BC Sanitation Technologies for Modified Atmosphere Packaged Fruits, Vegetable, Flowers Innovative Food Systems intends to provide a complete new system for the sanitation, preservation, and maintenance of food products that will be ripe, ready-to-eat, and in a food safe configuration. The sanitation technologies will be synergistic to developing the modified atmosphere box and lid technologies recently patented. The production processes of the greenhouse, orchard and field crop industries will be enhanced to provide sanitized fresh produce.
