Over $400,000 raised benefiting ill and injured Veterans, First Responders and their families
BOLOGNA, Italy, June 12, 2016 /CNW/ - This morning in Bologna, Italy, Wounded Warriors Canada (WWC) kicked off its third annual Battlefield Bike Ride (BBR16). Over the last seven months, 75 participants from coast-to-coast have trained and fundraised hard. Through their efforts, and the support of BBR16 sponsors Cervélo and Sandler Training Canada, the group has collectively raised over $400,000 in support of the life changing programs Wounded Warriors Canada funds to assist our ill and injured Canadian Armed Forces members, Veterans, First Responders and their families.
This year's journey begins in historic Ravenna where Julius Caesar gathered his forces before crossing the Rubicon. Moving along the coast the ride will enter Rimini, the Northern Allied objective in 1943 and the famed Gothic line. Canadian service in Italy would end in this area in February 1945. In many ways, Italy is where victory in Europe began. Famous sites in the Moro and Liri Valleys will be visited as the cyclists travel towards the town of Cassino, the objective of BBR16.
Scott Maxwell, Executive Director of Wounded Warriors Canada, commented, "For the last seven months, our participants have trained and fundraised hard to support our ill and injured Veterans, First Responders and their families living with operational stress injures like PTSD. Now, for seven days, they come together as one Team Canada – commemorating our proud military history and honouring the fallen. We are grateful for the participants and sponsors who continue to help make our programs possible and we wish everybody the very best as they begin their journey."
Todd McGowan, Battlefield Bike Ride Operations Manager, commented, "As a veteran, and a PTSD affected soldier, I have seen firsthand the incredible benefits of the programs that Wounded Warriors Canada funds. As a ride organizer and participant, I have the unique opportunity to both go through my own healing process as well as directly supporting others with their process. I feel incredibly fortunate to witness the impact, friendships, and team spirit this transformational event brings to Canadians from coast-to-coast."
