TORONTO, Nov. 16, 2015 /CNW/ - A day after the terrorist attacks in Paris, France, a mosque in Peterborough Ontario was set afire. The incident occurred shortly after members of the Kawartha Muslim Religious Association had been in the building celebrating the birth of a baby. They have called on police to investigate the arson as a hate crime.
Rubin Friedman, spokesperson for the Canadian Race Relations Foundation stated, "Immediately following the horrible events that terrorized the residents of Paris, Canadians came together in solidarity with victims of terrorism there, in Beirut and elsewhere. Today I was proud to attend a gathering of support in our nation's capital with other Crown agencies and governmental representatives as Paris continues to struggle with the aftermath of the attacks. Such responses reflect the best of the Canadian values we hold dear. Acting out in hate against any one community or religious group must be condemned. This is a time we must stand firm against all acts based on hate."
Anita Bromberg, Executive Director of the CRRF added, "I myself stood in this very mosque after it was targeted in the wake of 9/11. We must resolve in the wake of the acts of terror we continue to see around the world and at home, that we will continue to strive to build a society here in Canada based on respect, inclusion and social harmony. Those that commit acts of hate, who attempt to terrorize any one of us will be the ones isolated as they are brought to justice."
